During operation, the pistons transfer combustion force to the connecting rods while the rings seal compression and control oil on the cylinder walls. Inspection commonly follows low compression, excessive oil consumption, skirt damage, ring wear, or bore measurements requiring rebuild service. The same inspection should cover the measured cylinder bores, ring end gaps, wrist pins, connecting rods, bearings, and deck surfaces because wear or damage there can affect the replacement. Measure every cylinder bore, set ring gaps and clearances to the engine specification, use assembly lubricant, and follow the required rod-fastener procedure.
