During operation, the chain and matched drive components synchronize crankshaft and camshaft rotation through the engine cycle. Inspection commonly follows timing noise, correlation faults, damaged guides, weak tensioners, or measured chain elongation. The same inspection should cover the chain guides, tensioners, sprockets, cam phasers, crankshaft seal, and timing-cover sealing surfaces because wear or damage there can affect the replacement.
